Self Description
I am a writer and an editor with over 20 years of experience, both here in Malaysia and in Brunei Darussalam. Currently, I still write on a freelance basis for The Star and several other magazines. This means I can also teach journalism for those interested in taking up the degree at college. My command of the English language is excellent as are my writing skills, otherwise I would not have been able to work as an editor for so long. I have always been very good in English with a flair for writing since my schooldays, hence my chosen profession. I am especially good in English Literature because I appreciate the different writing styles and I love the analysis involved afterwards. I always encourage reading because that is where learning a language begins. I have two children of my own who are studying law, sociology, and English literature for their A levels. This means I am also a mother with hands-on experience with children from the youngest ages to teenagers and young adults. As for music, I am a qualified music teacher. Before I moved into a writing career, I gave piano lessons for 10 years to children from the Beginner's Level to Grade 8. I can still teach music as all my students scored merits and distinctions in both their ABRSM theory and practical examinations.
Proven Track Record
I became a tuition teacher quite by accident. One day, about a year ago, my neighbours approached me to help their Chinese-school going children improve their standard of English because they discovered that I am a published writer. News spread around and suddenly everyone started coming over for tuition. Currently, I am teaching children reading, pronunciation, vocabulary building, writing and expression of ideas ranging from Standard 1 to College. Of course, at the lower levels, the students are only learning the basics but reading and story-telling are what I emphasize on. Those at Form 6 and above are having difficulty writing descriptive or argumentative essays because of their poor grasp of the language at the foundation level. But they have improved with regular coaching and can write in a more cohesive manner than before.
Achievement
The emphasis of my classes is not so much in scoring As for the examination but in instilling a love and interest for the English language and by extension, a willingness to learn it. English is the medium of instruction in all colleges and universities and a child who has not grasped the language well by the time he reaches the higher education levels, will be severely hampered. I know that good English teachers are far and few in between especially in the present day when the standard has fallen so much. English is even being taught in Malay or Mandarin in schools and the pass mark for the subject is 40. Scoring an A in English in PMR or even SPM is therefore not a benchmark for how good the student is in the language. However, if paper qualifications is what one is being judged by these days, then when I sat for my HSC, I scored A1s in English Literature and the General Paper.
