"Do your best"
Self Description
I had my education in English, following the British-type education system. I sat for my Senior Cambridge 'O' level exam in 1968 achieving one of the best results in school. I did my 'A' level two years later and went on to do my Bachelor's Degree in Economics graduating with honours in 1974. I then worked with the Income Tax Department for five years before moving on to lecture at the Mara Institute of Technology. I then left to work with Price Waterhouse, one of the top international accounting firms, as a senior tax supervisor preparing myself to pursue a master's degree in taxation in the United States. After graduation, I rejoined Price Waterhouse as an assistant tax manager. I worked for a while before leaving for the United States again. I wrote a manual for Price Waterhouse on individual taxation. As my family was involved in the AFS(American Field Service) Student Exchange Programme, I was invited to be one of the field interviewers to select students from different schools to participate in the programme. I had to interview students, teachers and parents. I lived in the United States for a while before deciding to work with another international accounting firm, Coopers & Lybrand. I was a tax manager then. I was involved in the post-budget dialogue. I also pursued my German language course while working with the company. I received the prize for the best German student. I continued my German language course later on in Germany. I also studied French hoping to use my language skills in different parts of the world. I worked in New Zealand again with Price Waterhouse. I was hoping to do my Ph.D. and my proposal was subsequently accepted by one Canadian university. Due to lack of financial resources, I could not pursue my Ph.D. studies. I moved to teaching later on at Sedaya College preparing students for the North American programmes. I taught economics for a few semesters. I did part-time tutoring too. I moved to Metropolitan College to teach Australian economics before leaving for Australia to do my TESOL (Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages). I was given the opportunity to teach English to adult refugees coming from different parts of the world. I later taught part-time at ELS (English Language Service) International. The curriculum includes business English which is conducted for students with different professions. I then left for Azerbaijan teaching English with a group of Americans to adults and professionals. Besides teaching, I wrote poems and did some editing jobs. My poems were published in the American Anthology of Poems. I edited Ph.D. research papers for two students at the International Islamic University of Malaysia. Teaching has been an enriching experience for me. It's a challenge in so many ways. It's building bridges between generations. Teachers must build a rapport with students knowing their strengths and weaknesses. It's a coping mechanism, one that needs tact and diplomacy. Teachers and students learn to work together building relationships as well as developing talents for a better society. It takes time and effort for everyone involved including parents who are responsible for the upbringing of their children.
